Increase your wisdom and virtues through the new year
For this new year there should be growth in one’s wisdom and virtues. Ignorance and karmic hindrances must be eliminated, efforts should be made towards the perfection of one’s Bodhi cultivation, and afflictions and karmic hindrances should all be purified.

If a tiger wanted to eat you, would you be willing to be eaten? If a bad person wanted to kill you, would you happily be killed? “Do not do to others what you would not wish for yourself.” See things through other beings’ eyes—if you would not be willing, then do not carelessly take other lives; do not eat meat anymore.

Karmic obstacles will be like a virus. When you want to practice, the virus will strike, making you very tired, making you think delusive thoughts, giving you all kinds of ailments.

In Bodhisattva practices, we need to observe that living beings are inherently pure in nature;
We will not forsake any living beings, because we understand that all living beings have karmic obstacles.
We will not be afflicted by, or form attachments to phenomenal appearances.
Consequently, we will achieve effortless self-mastery in our Bodhisattva practice.

Upon hearing about the suffering in the worlds in the Ten Directions, you should think that your future Buddha Land must not be like that!
You should ensure that sentient beings are free from cold, hunger, and worries. If you often contemplate like this, you will be able to adorn your future Buddha Land.

Patriarch Yin Kuang taught us:
Fulfill our primary responsibilities, subdue deviance and be sincere, do no unwholesome deeds, and do all kinds of virtuous deeds.

In order to have a pure mind, you must first work on the karma of your body and mouth. Some might say, “It is good enough for a person to have a good heart.” Of course you must have a good heart, but what kind of action can show that? Your good deeds are evidence of your good heart. If you do not pay attention to the karma of your mouth, do not do good deeds and instead do bad deeds, how can you lie that you have a good heart?

In fact, you must not consume anything that is harmful to your body. This is why Buddhism teaches you to quit drinking and smoking. There is a saying that “all diseases enter through the mouth and all disasters come out of the mouth.” Not only should we not harm sentient beings, but we also must not consume anything that is harmful to our body such as tobacco and alcohol.
